Why This Website Exists

Everyone hates junk mail. In spite of this, junk mail houses continue to flood mailboxes nationwide with unwanted advertising and propaganda.

It has been estimated that more than 10 billion items of junk mail are sent each year. Offers include everything from credit card offers to pleas requesting charitable donations to fraudulent and illegal chain letters and everything in between.

Operation Mailback is intended to encourage marketers to send their advertisements only to those who want them, resulting in a substantial conservation of natural resources.

We have come up with an easy way to help you rid your mailbox of junk mail once and for all. And the best part is this – it’s free.

One Simple Step to Discourage Junk Mail

While other companies sell services, software and everything else to stop junkmail – our service is free.

We use the junk mailer’s very own tools against them. Corporations market very carefully and cost efficiency is very important to them. They want to get the most orders out of each campaign of junkmail they send. Knowing that most consumers are also very cost conscious, they often offer to pay for the postage a customer would need to use to send their order back to the advertiser.

This is done through the use of Business Reply Mail (BRM), a service of the United States Post Office.

Business Reply Mail works like this:

An example of a BRM Mailer is shown at the top of our webpage.

Advertisers will stop sending ads if the costs of sending them (and getting piles of them mailed back for disposal) is higher than the revenue they get from the orders generated. And that’s where Operation Mailback comes into play. Its a very simple yet effective way to get advertisers to stop sending their crap to you.

Participate in Operation Mailback

To participate, just download the flyer linked below and print it out.

Note that we now offer a paper-saving 4up design! That means you now get four flyers out of every sheet of paper. We have also optimized our flyers so they take less ink/toner to print, reducing your printing costs.

When you receive junk mail with a BRM piece, simply package up the advertisement along with a copy of our flyer in the postage paid mailer. For postcards, simply write “Stop Mass Marketing – www.operationmailback.com” on the postcard with a marker.

Then deposit your items in the nearest mailbox for pickup. The advertiser pays for the cost of the postage as well as the costs of disposing of the junk mail.

The more people that participate in this program, the more impact everyone’s efforts will have and the more junkmailers will take notice. They’ll notice because their postage costs will skyrocket. So be sure to encourage all of your friends, family and co-workers to participate as well. To help you with this, we have created some buttons and banners you can place on your websites or blogs to spread the word.

Why Do You Have Ads on This Site?

We’re sure some of you are getting ready to ask us this, so we’ll beat you to the punch and save you the time. Webhosting costs money and Operation Mailback has found no magic wands to wave to get out of paying for webhosting. Revenue from ads on this site will be used to maintain and improve the site and yes, to promote it using ethical means up to and including paying for non-banner, non-animated, non-sound generating links on other websites.

Unlike bulk mailers, however, we don’t stuff your mailbox full of unwanted ads printed on dead trees. We also honor your requests to not see our ads anymore, something the bulk mailers also have had a lot of problems with historically. If you don’t want to see the ads on this site anymore, you can turn them off and on at will, if you click on that link we’ll set a cookie on your machine indicating that you have opted out of seeing the ads. The cookie expires once every ten years. This is not a tracking cookie, there is no unique identifier included.
